Applied Research and Knowledge Translation

Much of my work involves the collection and analysis of information to support health planning and decision making. I conduct literature searches, interviews, surveys and focus groups. Pulling together information from various sources, making sense of it, and presenting it in a way that decision-makers can use is what I do best. Some of the environmental scans I have conducted are described below.

Project: Identification of Parent Health Education Resources
Client: Nova Scotia Department of Health
Description:The purpose of this work was to guide NS Public Health Services in the selection of parent health education resource material for distribution to new parents. The research included a literature review, a scan of existing resource material, focus groups with parents of young children and interviews with representatives of various minority organizations.

Project: Environmental scan of home visiting programs
Client: Nova Scotia Department of Health
Description:This research helped shape the provinces's new Healthy Beginnings Enhanced Home Visiting Program. It consisted of planning, conducting and analyzing interviews and surveys with staff of family support programs in Nova Scotia and neighbouring provinces.

Project: Demographic trends in the international community and policies to address them
Client:Population and Public Health Branch, Health Canada
Description: This research was aimed at stimulating discussion and action on policies to support Atlantic Canada's aging population. It consisted of a literature search on policies instituted in Finland, Japan and Australia in response to population aging and a discussion paper aimed at government policy makers and leaders in seniors' organizations.

Project:Discussion paper on a population health approach to falls prevention
Client: Community Links
Description:This discussion paper was used to mobilize potential partners for a new provincial falls prevention strategy by increasing their understanding of falls and how they can be prevented. It consisted of a review and synthesis of the literature, suitable for general audiences.

Project: Environmental scan of health research in Nova Scotia
Client: Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation
Description:This research provided an orientation and baseline information for the newly formed Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation. I interviewed health researchers and collected and analyzed information from a variety of databases to produce a discussion paper on the state of health research in Nova Scotia

Project: Environmental scan on diabetes prevention
Client: Population and Public Health Branch, Health Canada
Description:This research was used by government and community organizations in planning the Atlantic Canada roll-out of the Canadian Diabetes Strategy. It consisted of a literature search, surveys and interviews with people involved in programs that contribute to preventing diabetes.

Project: Demographic trends in aging
Client: Health Promotion and Programs Branch, Health Canada
Description:The purpose of this work was to promote government and community planning for population aging. It consisted of a broad-based search for information relating to economic and demographic trends in Atlantic Canada and analysis in terms of the health of future generations of seniors.
