Concertina on the South Coast of Newfoundland, 7 August 2006


Four weeks along the South Coast of Newfoundland aboard the “Concertina” from mid-July to mid-August 2006.
Monday, 7 August 2006	The Culotte to Grand Brit and Little Garia Bay; We encounter small craft on flat seas.
	Our first exercise on this calm sunny morning was to explore the inner basin of the NE Arm of Cinc Cerf Bay which required careful navigation, but appeared to be a snug anchorage for one vessel possibly using the lines from shore that were led out to the islet.

We then headed out and motor-sailed past Grand Bruit harbour (of which we have good memories from previous visits).Just east of this attractive and friendly outport, we had the unsettling experience of meeting two personal watercraft that had left Burgeo that morning for a run to the west, and were now returning, "exploring every little cove along the way". A little later, to the west of Grand Brit, we met a couple heading to the east, cruising in a small sailing craft of about 19 feet equippped with outriggers. We passed along outside La Poile Bay with a moderate SSW breeze and sea. Keeping an eye on the chart and the other on the ledges, columbiers and sunkers off Garia Bay we sailed on into Little Garia Bay, anchoring by 1500 near a small stream on the eastern cove side at the bay’s head.
	We spent the afternoon ashore. Following the stream, the crew discovered an excellent, deep bathing pool, and with heightened curiosity we scrambled and bushwhacked our way up through some dense growth. Finally coming out on open ground, we followed caribou paths, and soon arrived at the edge of a good-sized pond on the broad low rolling plateau land.
	We then took a more open route down to the rocky shore and back to “Concertina” for naps and supper.
