Index of Subjects Yesterday morning after I finished up the point counts in the Berwick Square, I decided to try for a few more species in my "nemesis" square, Aylesford Lake. This square is on the South Mountain (Kings) just E. of Berwick & largely consists of logged tracts, I was wandering down an old trail through an area that had been cutover years ago and appears to be having problems regenerating. I was passing through a patch of alders & birch when I upset a group of W/T Sparrows, Palm Warblers & Chickadees. The first two were obviously nesting there (as I have found in many such areas in this square) but I don't know what the reason was for the B/C Chickadees except they never turn down a chance to get in on a mobbing. In any case all this commotion brought in a number of other species, R/E Vireo, Yellowthroat, Parula & C/S Warbler. After determining the action was not worthy of their efforts, all proceeded to gather food and carry it away. Wow, four CFs in a matter of minutes. On my return hike I raised a Woodcock from a nest close to the trail. I could do no wrong, it seemed. This square has taken many hours to reach an acceptable # of species which in other squares one would reach in a morning or two. There are any number of spots here when one will not hear a solitary bird. (And they say Rachel Carson was wrong!!). I have yet to find a Pewee or Pheasant, rather funny/odd considering there were so many Cock Pheasants in the Berwick Square I spent some time waiting for them to cross the road before I could continue. Whatever drug they're taking is working! Good Atlassing, Angus
