Oct. 18, just across the Strait from you John, and there were quite a few Robins there as well (100+) The woods at the East Pt. lighthouse was full of trees laden with mountain ash. Today I was in the Big I.- Lismore area of Pictou Co. and noted loads of trees with berries incl. Hawthorne, Canada Holly and Mountain Ash. There are also lots of apples in trees. The berries are really abundant on the road to Camp Geddie in The Ponds. I saw a few Robins, but the wind was so high most passerines were not moving a lot. I noted a flock of 30+ Cedar Waxwings in the M. Ash on Geddie Rd. There is indeed a great berry crop along this shore and on the adjacent hardwood slopes. If this area is a key stop-over location for feeding, the strong northerly's and northeasterly's of the past few days, combined with poor visibility, may have caused them to overshoot the area and force them to back track (reverse migration) against the wind. They are travelling in flocks ranging in size from 6 to 40-50. They are consistently flying in this one direction, given a few degrees north or east. The winds have been consistently from the North or Northeast. So this movement is not a result of flying downwind which is believed to be a frequent cause of reverse migration.
