Hi Tom,

You may be on to something. There is indeed a great berry crop along this
shore and on the adjacent hardwood slopes. If this area is a key stop-over
location for feeding, the strong northerly's and northeasterly's of the past
few days, combined with poor visibility, may have caused them to overshoot
the area and force them to back track (reverse migration) against the wind.

Thanks

John in Doctor's Brook, Antigonish Co.

Hi John

Perhaps to take advantage of known crops of winter berries (mountain ash
[dog wood], holly .....) in large staging areas along the shore while they
await the favourable high pressure systems to depart our shores for a more
Sothern climate.

Just a thought

Subject: [NatureNS] Northeast Reverse Migration

For the past 3 days, I have seen hundreds of American Robins flying
northeastward along the Northumberland Strait. They are travelling in flocks
ranging in size from 6 to 40-50. They are consistently flying in this one
direction, given a few degrees north or east. The winds have been
consistently from the North or Northeast. So this movement is not a result
of flying downwind which is believed to be a frequent cause of reverse
migration. Any ideas on why such a large reverse migration would take place
and last for 3 days?
