To me the issue of the APOSTROPHE and its imminent extinction is a
BIGGY. Regarding place-names, I believe that not only is there a
grammar sub-issue, but the dropping of the apostrophe carries with it
the dropping of heritage information that mnight prove to be
difficult or impossible to regain as time goes by. I think the Royal
Geographical Society rules are in there somewhere, and once I heard
that map-readers can get confused when an apostrophe might look like
an isle/small island.

Perhaps this can all be discussed later by those of us to whom this
is not trivial?

My inclination, along with my own grammar rules (personal ones that
make sense to me), for questionable place names, like Starr's Point
east of Port Williams, is to put the apostrophe in whenever my guess
is that one is deserved.

One case where I was wrong, and no longer use an apostrophe, is for
Noggins Corner Farm-market at Greenwich.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
