Mention was made then of the reluctance of mapmakers to use apostrophes over bodies of water in case they get mistaken for islands. As funny as this sounds, I got the impression this quirk wasn't just apocryphal. Brian ----- Original Message ----- From: James W. Wolford To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca Sent: Thursday, July 10, 2008 2:35 PM Subject: [NatureNS] Peter or Peters vs. Peter's Island To me the issue of the APOSTROPHE and its imminent extinction is a BIGGY. Regarding place-names, I believe that not only is there a grammar sub-issue, but the dropping of the apostrophe carries with it the dropping of heritage information that mnight prove to be difficult or impossible to regain as time goes by. I think the Royal Geographical Society rules are in there somewhere, and once I heard that map-readers can get confused when an apostrophe might look like an isle/small island. Perhaps this can all be discussed later by those of us to whom this is not trivial? My inclination, along with my own grammar rules (personal ones that make sense to me), for questionable place names, like Starr's Point east of Port Williams, is to put the apostrophe in whenever my guess is that one is deserved. One case where I was wrong, and no longer use an apostrophe, is for Noggins Corner Farm-market at Greenwich. Cheers from Jim in Wolfville. When in doubt, I always will go with the best local knowledge I can get. It is interesting, however, that some local websites refer to it as Peter Island, others Peters Island, and still others Peter's Island.
