You have the same problem here that I have often spoken of in =
relation to Lake Jolly , ten miles from Bear River, also in Digby =
County. The original name came from a man named "Jolly" who was believed =
to be the first settler there. Some map maker decided the name should be =
"Joli" and so it is that old timers still call it Jolly, while all the =
maps say it is Joli.
In your case the name was "Peters" - from a man's name also, that =
has now been changed to "Peter."

Roland

As a Brier Island resident, born here over 60 years ago this is my =
slant on this topic: I beleive all the long time residents of Westport & =
Freeport call Peters Island, Peters Island. This is the traditional name =
used when this island is refered to. Why should an outside, so called =
authority, give the island another name or have the authority to do so? =
It would be like calling Halifax, Halifix. What a riot that would cause. =
I think the maping people & the Gazetter of Canada should amend the name =
they have given Peters Island.=20
  Next!!
