style=3D"WORD-SPACI

You can rest assured that the "correct spelling" as ordained by the Canadian Geographical Names Committee, is Peter Island. Any possessive name place has been reduced to the singular, rendering the meaning obtuse.

An example, I am from Neil's Harbour (Victoria County). My sister-in-law was born in Neil's Harbour and when she applied for her Passport she received it back with the birthplace stroked out. Since she had urgent need of a Passport, she had to travel to Halifax to hopefully move it along. When they were filling in the birthplace one person marked in Neil's Harbour, another "whited" it out and a third marked in over the whiteout "Neil Harbour". The sign now says "Neil Harbour". Whether this will satisfy the Passport officials is not yet known.

I don't know if the "query" function on their website works or not but when I enter "Neil's" or "Neil" Harbour, the return states no records exist.
Angus

At 11:46 PM 09/07/2008, you wrote:

Does anyone know the official name of the island between Brier Island and Long Island. The Nova Scotia map says Peter Island. The Lighthouse Society website says Peter Island. Many locals call it Peters Island (Peters is a long standing Islands name). I need to use the name in an interpretive panel, and I'd like to get it right.
Thanks,
Andy
