But migrants have built up quickly in July on the Eastern Shore. In Three Fathom Harbour, mainly at Shorebird Cove in front of my cottage, I counted the following: July 1 Black-bellied Plover - 2, adults in breeding plumage Killdeer - 4 (2 adults, 2 young) Greater Yellowlegs - 2 Willet - 16 Lesser Yellowlegs - 42 Short-billed Dowitcher - 16 July 6 Black-bellied Plover - 8, adults & juveniles Semipalmated Plover - 6, adults Greater Yellowlegs - 2 Willet - 67 Lesser Yellowlegs - 91 Spotted Sandpiper - 1 Short-billed Dowitcher - 742 The increased number of Willets represents the beginning of migration for the adult females, which breed in Nova Scotia and leave the young before the males do, to replenish their badly depleted resources. It's a wonderful time of year to look at shorebirds, with gauky young Willets mixed in with the adults, and all accompanied by the welcome, cheerful-sounding chortling of dowitchers. Cheers, Susann Myers --Boundary_(ID_k6OCpZHwCr6PqIyMS0MvNA) Content-type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> <META http-equiv=Content-Type content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"> <META content="MSHTML 6.00.6000.16674" name=GENERATOR> <STYLE></STYLE> </HEAD> <BODY bgColor=#ffffff> <DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>I was out of the province for the last third of June, so missed the start of shorebird migration, alas!
