Greetings, all.

Shorebird migration is well underway in Nova Scotia, particularly for Short-billed Dowitchers. Migration of adult Short-billeds typically peaks in the last week of July, in the Halifax area. It's interesting to look at flocks of Short-billeds at this time of year - they're all adults right now, and many of them are of the hendersoni subspecies, which is much more extensively rufous below than our more common griseus migrants. It's also wonderful to hear Short-billeds again, with their friendly chortling out on the flats.

Today at low tide in Three Fathom Harbour I saw the following (all but Willets were adults):

Semipalmated Plover 37
Piping Plover 1
Greater Yellowlegs 12
Eastern Willet 92
Lesser Yellowlegs 67
Semipalmated Sandpiper 10
Short-billed Dowitcher 610

Cheers,
Susann Myers
