Index of Subjects The kicker in the corn based diet is the true costs that are not obvious in the process. Corn is an extremely subsidized "grain". The amount of petroleum and fertilizers used in the growing of the corn is another issue. When one grain is so much more efficient at producing energy than any other - it seems that its use would have much less environmential impact than any other grain for a given number of calories. At present, I understand, weanling pigs, weighing 12 kg about are been shipped to Iowa for growing out to 100 kgs on local Iowa corn. It takes less energy to ship the pigs than to ship the corn to Nova Scotia. In addition the parts of the corn the pigs don't use can be spread back on the land making the corn production more environmential efficient. Have you visited the Meteghan River in August? The return trip for the truck brings feed to NS to feed the sows to raise the weanlings. seems like the Green way to go! A complicated question but enjoy the spring.
