I run a wildlife rehabilitation centre near Truro, and this summer I had the unique Privilege of raising a nestling Pileated male...he came in head injured...just out of the nest...so I guess a fledgling. I have raised many birds and mammals over the years and I can honestly say, this was the most fun I ever had and the best release I ever had...I KNOW this bird will do well....they are simply amazing creatures..so enjoy Helene Van Doninck -----Original Message----- From: naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca [mailto:naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca]On Behalf Of Bernard Burke Sent: Tuesday, December 26, 2006 8:13 PM To: nature ns Subject: [NatureNS] Pileated Woodpecker Tuesday, December 26th. 8:12 P.M. My sister Rita and her family had just returned today from visiting relatives for the holidays in Cape Breton when she showed me some great photos of a Pileated Woodpecker she had taken on Sunday the 24th. It was brought to her attention by our brother who had viewed the bird in the same general location on the previous day. As I may have mentioned around July of this year when I viewed and photographed one in the general hometown area for the first time, it has been, at least for our family, a rare privilege to view this species there. I had never seen a Pileated until I moved out of the area and even my father had recalled only ever seing one, many years before. With any luck, the following view will become a more regular occurrence in River Bourgeois, and Richmond County in general. Here is the first of three photos from Rita, numbers 11 thru 13, for those who wish to have a look: http://bernieb.smugmug.com/gallery/916397/1/41786843/Medium Bernard Burke blburke@ns.sympatico.ca Dartmouth --Boundary_(ID_QpmEbBaptP5rmzFdZan31g) Content-type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> <META http-equiv=Content-Type content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"> <META content="MSHTML 6.00.5730.11" name=GENERATOR> <STYLE></STYLE> </HEAD> <BODY bgColor=#ffffff> <DIV><SPAN class=847514714-27122006><FONT face=Arial color=#0000ff size=2>Lovely pics Bernard..and pileateds are a fav bird of mine.
