On the rocks below the Whale's Back mansion were two seals. Often times there are upwards of 40 seals here at low tide. But the surprise was a pair of Harlequin Ducks foraging in the surf. This area is accessed from the Duncan's Cove parking lot. Follow the road into the gully and towards the Whale's Back mansion. There is some steep climbing required here to get to the shoreline! The hike along the ridge towards the observation bunker is also enjoyable and the view over the ocean is splendid sometimes affording a look at pelagic birds, if the winds are easterly. I've attached nine photos starting with a Harlequin Duck and ending with an American Wigeon. I couldn't resist yet another pic of the Ring-necked Pheasant standing atop the back yard platform feeder.
