Congregation
We
welcome
affiliated
members and friends from other churches and
fellowships, near and far, and first time seeking
visitors. First time seekers will value our welcoming
nature regardless of their religious traditions,
sexual orientation, age, gender, race or ability. We
share the mystery and wonder of life's journey.
We
also Welcome our new Minister, the Rev. Julie
Denny-Hughes who comes to us from Indianapolis. Julie
will be leading worship, providing pastoral care and
helping the congregation achieve its goals.
Our South End
Halifax (Nova
Scotia) congregation consists of 107 members and
friends. We are guided by our seven
UU Principles
The
congregation provides support by assisting with
ongoing community projects and programs, offering to
the community spiritual and social programs, and involvement in
outreach global projects. There is a sharing of
energy raising experiences that give way to our
nurturing and supporting a joy-filled and peaceful
cohabitation on this earth home.
Our congregants
are each unique in finding their path to us at this
time. Here are a few examples:
One
couple moved to the Halifax area from
California in 1999 upon retiring. They had
visited Nova Scotia a few years previous and
liked the area very much. They had been
married in a UU church in California and had
attended sporadically. We have been truly
enriched with their choice to settle here. We
now see them helping out regularly to those
who are in need and active in various church
committees. "I
think it is great to be with a group of
people who can agree with your point of view
yet argue the point with you, often
simultaneously."
Another
treasure of our church was born, raised and
educated in Halifax. As her life unfolded she
would live in New York, Congo, Ghana,
Toronto, and Ottawa returning after raising
her children to Halifax. After trying many
churches, she was introduced to the UU
minister and found her spiritual home. She
feels free to say what she is thinking and
not to have a set of beliefs. "It is just like
a family here".
A
family who lived off the land in Northern
Ontario for a number of years under the
influence of Henry David Thoreau made it to
our doors thanks to the work they found in
this city and a brother who happened to be a
member of this UU church. "The time to be
happy is now; the place to be happy is here;
the way to be happy is to make others
so."
A
member of this congregation for 40 years had
been influenced by her mother's UU faith in
the US. She has taken on many roles and seen
many changes take place since her arrival to
this church. "It
is the people who are here. I come because of
the social life."
A local
family found this church by meeting a member
of the congregation. The mother's path has
been that of growing up Baptist, moving away
from religion altogether in those early adult
years, swinging back with a family to
Anglican (husband^Òs religion), then
returning to the Baptist again. Christianity
was hard to accept and appreciate. "Upon entering the UU
church for the first time, and continuing
after 7 years, there is a sense of
home."
We are
individuals who use our special skills and talents
both natural and learnt. There is opportunity to give
support to others and when need arises being able to
accept support graciously.
We
welcome all who wish to share in this religious and
spiritual experience.
