In Solidarity
Images of Life on the Axis of Evil & Beyond.
1945 to the present

“I heard this piece on CBC radio one day, about The International Day for the
Elimination of Racial Discrimination. They were talking to kids, students at an
event to celebrate the day. When the reporter asked this little boy what he had
learned he said  - ‘I learned everybody’s the same’ -  I freaked out! That’s
our answer to not being racist, but we’re not the same. We’re different and
that’s to be celebrated.”  That was the spark that began to ignite the idea of
this photography exhibit. It came from Andrea Puszcar, spreading first to Laura
MacKay and Andrea Ritchie (the 3 curators of the event).
It now involves the work of 30 people, artists and others, and can be seen in
four venues, with more on the way.

IN SOLIDARITY is an exhibition of photographs that portray everyday life in
the 23 countries that share the common experience of being bombed by the United
States since the end of World War II.

The goal of the show is to create a sense of solidarity amongst people who feel
that the US war on Iraq is unjust.  At the same time the show confronts past
acts of US aggression in countries around the world.  It shows a truer
portrait of life in these countries.  These are real people, real places, real
homes, not just glorified images of war on TV that we don’t want to pay
attention to anymore, or can’t bear to face.

Pictures are of family, friends, community events, scenery, workplace, scenery,
celebrations, etc.  Images of EVERYDAY LIFE.

The city-wide show is now open at:

The Khyber Centre for the Arts
(Staircase Gallery & Frame Gallery)
The Bella Muse
Bob & Lori’s Food Emporium
Venus Envy

We’ll be adding more venues as the show continues.

Opening celebration & reception
Saturday, May 10th 7 – 9pm at Bella Muse
(2530 Agricola St.)

The show will be in place until June 5th, and we are still accepting
submissions.
