Hello Folks!

As you may or may not know, CKDU (Dalhousie University's independent
alternative campus/community radio station) is gearing up for its 15th
annual funding drive. The drive kicks off Friday January 28, 2000, with
the goal of raising $50,000 by Sunday February 6. This is the bare minimum
CKDU needs to stay on the air, so that it can bring to the community
another year of independent music and perspectives and discussions of
diverse environmental, cultural, and social issues that would otherwise
never get heard on air in this region.

I'm hoping you will consider making a small pledge to CKDU, either by
calling up the CKDU pledge line (494-2779, or 49-HAPPY) during the drive,
OR by giving an advance pledge to any show that you might regularly enjoy.

CKDU regularly airs in-depth features and interviews on various
environmental topics during 'The Evening Affair' between 5:00 and 6:00PM
weekdays, and Paul Shreenan's locally focussed environment show 'Ecolos'
now airs for a full hour starting at noon on Mondays. CKDU also recently
aired the award winning 13-part series 'Deep Ecology for the 21st
Century'.

My own show 'Changes in Latitude', which features world music (LOTS of
percussion and world rhythms!) plus some global perspectives, is on
Mondays 10:30am to noon, and my funding drive show is Monday January 31st.
Many other CKDU hosts also incorporate (if one can use that term)
environmental and social awareness into their show themes in a way that no
other station can match. CKDU won a national award for best
campus/community radio station in Canada for two years running.

And at the risk of sounding consumerish, there are lots of prizes to act
as incentives to pledge - CD's, cassettes, books, grand prize draws for
airline tickets, discounts at local small businesses and much much more.
Any pledge from $5 to $50 or more is welcomed and rewarded.

It's my belief that non-profit radio is a vital force in our community,
one of the few accessible outlets for independent, non-commercial voices
we have. CKDU has its annual funding drive because it needs financial
support from the community; It is NOT wealthy, being run by a dedicated
troupe of ~160 volunteers and powered by a signal of just 50 watts at
97.5FM.

Anyhow, happy listening, and thanks for the consideration!

Cheers, Peter Watson :)

A word from our lawyers ...

Don't forget ... COPYRIGHT material, such as newspaper/magazine articles
cannot be posted on sust-mar without the owner's permission. It's against
the law. CROSS-POSTINGS (messages from other lists) are also discouraged.

In either case, why not tell us something about the issue in your own
words? Or ... send a clipping along with the URL where the original can be
found, or directions how to join the list it came from?

Takes a few more minutes, but makes for a more interesting sust-mar ... :)
