Celebration tonight A celebration hosted by the centre for women's health will be held tonight at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium at 7 p.m. May will speak and entertainment will be provided. Donations will be accepted at the door for the Sierra Club's efforts to help people living on Frederick Street, near the Sydney tar ponds. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wednesday, October 14, 1998 Donations lead to new women's chair at Dalhousie By SHAUNE MacKINLAY -- The Daily News Environmental activist Elizabeth May has a wealthy secret admirer. May, executive director of the Sierra Club of Canada, will be Dalhousie University's first chairwoman in women's health, thanks to two anonymous donations totalling $1.6 million. Outside Canada One donor from outside the country specified the money be used to establish the Elizabeth May Chair for Women and the Environment. "Ms. May has persevered against considerable odds in defence of the environment for many years. Her breadth of knowledge, quick mind, and eloquence are inspirational," said a statement from the anonymous benefactor read at yesterday's announcement in Halifax. The donation augments an earlier one intended to further the efforts of The Maritime Centre for Excellence in Women's Health, which will be closely involved with May's work. May said she has no idea who donated the money. "It is an honour which is beyond words," she said. "This is not what I ever expected to happen." As chairwoman, May will teach, research, and lecture throughout the Maritimes. Although her primary appointment will be in health professions, May will also work with other faculties, community groups, and government agencies. May will only hold the post for a year, but the chair will continue to bear her name. Work as an activist has often put May at odds with some in the medical field, who don't hold her beliefs about the dangers of pesticides, or the health hazards of living near the Sydney tar ponds. "Maybe there are ways from this position that we can find some commonality, find some room for discussion about what needs to be done and how we develop the research and how we have to protect people whose health is in danger because of environmental threats," she said. University president Tom Traves said Dalhousie welcomes the debate. "Elizabeth has explored these issues and many of them are controversial but that's the nature of the issue, not necessarily the nature of the person," he said.
