Hi

I think maybe we should develop a Web Hits Users Guide. Many people do not
fully understand what 'hits' actually mean, and how log files can be used for
site analysis.

For example, getting a list of hits in a tree structure, to some, would
indicate a causal relationship. It is assumed that hits on the parent page
should be greater than or equal to the sum of hits on all child pages. The
difference (parent hits less sum of child hits) would indicate where only the
parent page was viewed. But in reality, this is not necessarily the case.

Some users bookmark pages, and may return directly to a child page. The sum of
child page hits could exceed the hits on a parent page.

Some users refresh pages, thus increasing page counts.

Analysis of log files can only provide some general indicators. Trend - is
traffic increasing or decreasing. Popularity - (more vs less) may be inferred
by the magnitude of hits.

Display of a page does not mean the the content was actually conveyed, only
that the 'next' button was selected. One cannot assume that the user actually
read the page.

A users guide could save our users a lot of unproductive time and effort by at
least pointing out the pitfalls of log file analysis.

Maybe this could be an IP or Tech Committee project for the coming year. It
would be a valuable service for our membership.
