I'm not aware of what CCN is doing for public access terminals; however, are you aware of the FreeCom Project? We are currently working on a utility for PATs that is completely secure and maintenance-free. This Project is a joint venture between the CN in Edmonton and ValleyNet here in the Fraser Valley. What follows is a brief concept of how FreeCom works - for more information, please contact the Project maintainer, Dana Epp, at dmepp@valleynet.bc.ca. FreeCom is a custom communications program that is run from a bootable, write-protected floppy diskette. The only files on the diskette are the DOS system files, AUTOEXEC.BAT, the communications program and 3 config files - two of which are customizable. One is a "banner" to be displayed while offline (i.e. ValleyNet) and the other contains all necessary and relevant modem and communication settings. This PAT utility is freely available to all community networks. For more info, contact Dana at the address above.
