I found two theories as to the possible function of the woodcock =E2=80=9Csi=
lky walk=E2=80=9D in the article below. One says that it simulates the sound=
s of a burrowing mole thus scaring worms to the surface. And the other sugge=
sted by Bernd Heinrich (love his books!) that it is a low level predator war=
ning with the woodcock saying  =E2=80=9CI know you are there. I will fly off=
 if you approach so don=E2=80=99t waste your energy or mine by trying.=E2=80=
=9D.  Both nifty possibilities that would explain the usefulness of teaching=
 the young this unique  behaviour.
