That's good! I am just not seeing or hearing them across from the Belle Isle Marsh like I once was. However, my observations are casual, while out exercising the dog on the tracks. It was good habitat for them where I used to see them, and the fields are not mowed anymore in many places. Strangely, I don't manage to visit Belle Isle very often, what with spring-summer being the most hectic at work. Glad to read there are still some! Donna From: naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca [mailto:naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca] On Behalf Of Keith Lowe Sent: June-30-15 5:01 PM To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca Subject: RE: [NatureNS] Belle Isle and Bobolinks I was there twice this year and saw 20 - 22 Bobolinks (almost all males) each time. Last year I saw most of them in the center field but this year I'm seeing them mainly in the eastern side. Last year I was disheartened to see center field was cut before the Bobolink fledged so that is probably why there are not many in the center filed this year. I've been seeing small numbers of both teal and Rick Whitman and I had 15 Northern Shoveler there on Jun 14. I don't know if it was the time of day or what, but I never heard or saw any bobolinks at all on my visit on the past Sunday. I would be most interested in knowing if any others who have visited there saw normal numbers for bobolinks this year. Water levels within the marsh were very high. Therefore, higher amounts of water I would assume could definitely affect nesting and maybe the resident bobolinks had left due to nesting failure. All comments are most welcome. I hope that I'm wrong. Noticeably missing from the French Basin Trail and Belleisle were green-winged and blue-winged teal and northern shovelers. Comments on this would be welcome also. Unfortunately as much as I would like it is difficult for me to visit there. and I never see any more press reports about it. Does anyone know how the scheme worked out? Folks who visit there could report on the numbers they see or an offical report would be great. Enjoy Canada Day!
