Bobolinks are pretty much non-existant down this way. I miss them. I live across the river from Belle Isle (more or less-in Tupperville). When I moved here in 2007, there were lots of bobolinks along the railway tracks. I am not sure just what year the popln crashed-maybe 3 years ago? Someone will know that. I haven't heard a Bobolink along the fields of the Annapolis River across from Belle Isle and vicinity in 3 seasons. On a happier note, the bank swallows have returned to the gravel pit in Tupperville (take the dirt road past the little Tupperville Hall to the pit). They were busy excavating last week (late nesters like the Chimney Swifts, I guess?). Thought they would not resume living there after all the digging in the pit during nesting season last year. (I spoke to the folks doing the digging and they avoided the nest holes, but it was very disruptive for them.) They are back, however! Let's hope some Bobolinks recover one of these days! Donna From: naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca [mailto:naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca] On Behalf Of James Hirtle Sent: June-30-15 4:01 PM To: Naturens Naturens Subject: RE: [NatureNS] Belle Isle and Bobolinks Hi Paul and all: Normally when I visit there I see lots of bobolinks. I don't know if it was the time of day or what, but I never heard or saw any bobolinks at all on my visit on the past Sunday. I would be most interested in knowing if any others who have visited there saw normal numbers for bobolinks this year. Water levels within the marsh were very high. Therefore, higher amounts of water I would assume could definitely affect nesting and maybe the resident bobolinks had left due to nesting failure. All comments are most welcome. I hope that I'm wrong. Noticeably missing from the French Basin Trail and Belleisle were green-winged and blue-winged teal and northern shovelers. Comments on this would be welcome also. Unfortunately as much as I would like it is difficult for me to visit there. and I never see any more press reports about it. Does anyone know how the scheme worked out? Folks who visit there could report on the numbers they see or an offical report would be great. Enjoy Canada Day!
