Hi All=2C
For those who don't have the time and or money (fruit isn't cheap up h=
ere in winter) to provide fresh fruit to newly arriving migrants here are =
a few things that can be done in advance=2C or even now=2C to prepare for w=
inters like this one. One is to=2C in late fall=2C collect damaged apples=
=2C pears and other fruit that have fallen on the ground and are not going =
to be used by humans.=20
I store a big bag of wild apples before first snow and store them in=
a small garbage can (to keep mice and squirrels at bay) in my unheated she=
d until the first robins and other migrants arrive in spring. A second thin=
g that can be done is to save the remains (skins cores etc.) of fruit used =
for our personal baking and eating. Third we ask our local grocery store to=
save you some of the unsold rotted fruit that they are about to throw in t=
he garbage.
Hope this helps. All the best.=20

I have been trying to feed the robins in our=0A=
neighbourhood. After a trip to Costco=2C I put out apples=2C=0A=
    grapes=2C strawberries=2C suet and a chopped up hard-boiled egg.
=0A=
   =20
=0A=
One robin has come and considers it his/her stash. It chases off=0A=
any other robins and allows only starlings to get at it. So much=0A=
for sharing the wealth. I put more out front so that at least one=0A=
    more robin could feed.
=0A=
   =20
=0A=
90% of the time it eats only the apple. I have seen it with a grape=0A=
and occasionally it will peck at the suet and egg. Nothing=2C=0A=
including the starlings=2C will touch the strawberries. I guess I=0A=
    will have strawberry shortcake tonight.

We've been seeing all sorts of starving=0A=
birds all winter=2C and lately robins and woodcock.=
=0A=
I know you mention the robins you've seen look=0A=
fat=2C but without actually touching them there's no=
=0A=
way to determine their condition...only palpation=0A=
of the breast muscle can do that. I doubt there's=0A=
a pile of fat robins in NS right now.
=0A=
Have lately had multiple cases where people are=0A=
traveling to us with woodcock=2C robins=2C and lately=
=0A=
Saw Whets...which are thin and weak enough that=0A=
                      they've died on the way.
=0A=
We have a pile of owls here that are holding till=0A=
the weather breaks for release. Not much sense in=0A=
feeding them all winter only to let them go in a=0A=
food scarcity situation. Bare grass can't come=0A=
soon enough for me. Our food budget for 2014/2015=0A=
                      was surpassed long ago!

                        Pat and I have=0A=
been wondering about how well our various=0A=
spring birds are making out=2C especially here=0A=
in The Valley compared with other areas of the=0A=
province. Nearly all of the robins we have=0A=
seen looked fat and very healthy=2C but we heard=
=0A=
on Thursday that Michael Laceby of The=0A=
Blomidon Inn in Wolfville found two dead=0A=
robins that morning (he said that=0A=
superficially they looked big and normal to=0A=
him). I have been especially worried about=0A=
the early woodcocks=2C which have been so=0A=
                          incredibly abundantly reported by everyone=0A=
this year of the very late spring. Two days=0A=
ago we heard by way of a Sierra Club message=0A=
that Hope Swinimer had quite a few woodcocks=0A=
at Hope For Wildlife in Seaforth that were in=0A=
need of care. Very few of the reported=0A=
sightings to us on naturens have been of birds=0A=
in distress=2C but both Andrew Hebda and Hope=0A=
Swinimer reported oodles of calls about=0A=
distressed or dying birds of various kinds=2C=0A=
including especially robins. Maybe we can=0A=
find out from Helene Van Doninck in Truro=0A=
about how she is faring in the wildlife rehab=92=
=0A=
business=2C compared with Hope For Wildlife.=0A=
