Although her work has mostly been health = development in Cambodia - she will be adjusting her presentation to = discuss the environmental changes in Cambodia exploring causes and = interventions to try to help stop deforestation and preserve animals = quickly heading for extinction.=20 Cheryl has lived and worked in Cambodia for 5 years and has her Masters = Degree in International Community Development Management. She = notes-currently Cambodia is being deforested at an extremely alarming = rate. (In 1997 I counted 400 semi trucks in 1 day full of giant trees = being transported out of the province {she lived in}- and this has = continued into the present.) One of my former co-workers, Ben Davis, is = trying hard to set up a Community Forest protect (he currently has 5000 = hectares). He is trying to educate the community on the extreme = importance of protecting the trees, land and animals. He is trying to = get the government to protect the land and declare it illegal to hunt or = deforest on this property. In exchange he is trying to draw tourism to = the area for income generation for the community to see the animals and = birds that are protected. In a land where 1000 year old trees are being = felled and the once second largest tiger population in the world thought = to be eliminated there is reason for concern. Come on out to hear = Cheryl's prospective and bring a friend.=20 ------=_NextPart_000_0034_01CF1DA1.CC008500 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> <META content=3D"text/html; charset=3Diso-8859-1" = http-equiv=3DContent-Type> <META name=3DGENERATOR content=3D"MSHTML 8.00.6001.23543"> <STYLE></STYLE> </HEAD> <BODY bgColor=3D#ffffff> <DIV><FONT size=3D2 face=3DArial></FONT> </DIV> <DIV><FONT size=3D2 face=3DArial>Ken McKenna<BR>Box 218 Stellarton = NS<BR>B0K=20 1S0<BR>902 752-7644<BR></FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=3D2 face=3DArial></FONT> </DIV> <DIV>Hi all</DIV> <DIV>Just a heads-up on the next Pictou Co Naturalist's = Club presentation=20 at the New Glasgow Library community room <STRONG>Tues Feb 4 at 6:30=20 p.m</STRONG>. </DIV> <DIV>Getting up this morning and seeing the thermometer below -15C it is = nice to=20 know our next presentation will transport us to a warmer climate</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV><STRONG>Cheryl Hamilton</STRONG> will be speaking on the = changes=20 taking place in Cambodia from the 1990's until the present with her = presentation titled : <STRONG>Cambodia Then and Now".</STRONG> Although = her work=20 has mostly been health development in Cambodia - she will be adjusting = her=20 presentation to discuss the environmental changes in Cambodia exploring = causes=20 and interventions to try to help stop deforestation and preserve animals = quickly=20 heading for extinction. </DIV> <DIV><FONT size=3D2 face=3DArial></FONT> </DIV> <DIV><FONT size=3D2 face=3DArial>Cheryl has <FONT size=3D3=20 face=3D"Times New Roman">lived and worked in Cambodia for 5 years and = has her=20 Masters Degree in International Community Development Management.
