--047d7b6d7c800af62f04f142c233 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 31 January 2014 Hi All; This has been a difficult winter for people and birds, and that is demonstrated by the current NS Winter Bird List, which is shaping up to possibly provide the lowest total number of species since I began keeping track 18 years ago. We are currently at 178 species, and the previous low total was 181, back in 1998/99, when there were fewer birders involved, and eBird did not exist. We are missing a few species that are typically reported every winter: *Wood Duck, Black-backed Woodpecker, Ruddy Turnstone, Pine Grosbeak*. Some may turn up in Christmas Bird Counts that have yet to be submitted, so I still have hope we will not have a "last place" winter. But there is another reason to not hang up your binoculars until spring. Tomorrow, 1 February, is the start of the month-long *"Depths Of Winter List"*, or DOWL for short. This will be our 7th tally of all the bird species seen across Nova Scotia during the month of February, and the count period starts tomorrow, a day with mild temperatures forecast, and no storm, so there is no excuse to not get out and find those DOWL birds. To report DOWL birds to this list just put "*DOWL*" in the subject line. We will be keeping track of the sightings on the winter list page, whose URL is: *http://tinyurl.com/nswinter <http://tinyurl.com/nswinter>* Good (winter) birding, Blake -- Blake Maybank <bmaybank@gmail.com> White's Lake, Nova Scotia My Blog: *CSI: Life* <http://blakemaybank.com> Organiser, *Maritimes Nature Travel Club* <http://tinyurl.com/naturetravel> <http://tinyurl.com/naturetravel> Author, "*Birding Sites of Nova Scotia* <http://tinyurl.com/birdingns> <maybank@ns.sympatico.ca> --047d7b6d7c800af62f04f142c233 Content-Type: text/html;
