Hi All=2C Like those commenting below I too have noticed a sharp decline=
in the use of my 24 Tree Swallow boxes this year. Whether it just because =
this spring arrived much later than last year or there is a another reason=
=2C like the many cold rainy days=2C I'm not sure=3B but something is defin=
itely amiss. I'm out walking most days and it's not only the swallows th=
at are missing. Only a few butterflies have been seen - 4 species and a few=
dozen leps observed total. I've also seen just two odonata and a handful o=
f moths. Wildflowers are also late although fruit blossoms are plentiful. I=
'm not sure about bird song as I find it hard to compare between years on a=
certain date. My general uneducated opinion is that bird numbers=2C in gen=
eral=2C are down=3B but I usually walk in late morning when many birds have=
stopped singing. I won't know for sure how bad Tree Swallow breeding =
is this year until I clean out the boxes after breeding is finished or next=
spring but I expect it to be down considerably. All the best. =

Hi all=2C
Thanks to the weather=2C our tree swallow study sites (~ 50 nestboxes near =
Gaspereau) are showing our first cases of starving nestlings that we've see=
n in years=2C including a couple of cases where whole broods have died.
Tree swallows have all sorts of adaptations to deal with lousy years -- in =
that sense=2C you could say they anticipate having a bad year now and then.=
But still=2C it's shaping up to be one of those years.

en a notable decline in bird song at least in Lunenburg Co. Comparing this =
year's song to the five years of almost daily atlassing shows a significant=
