Hi all,

Thanks to the weather, our tree swallow study sites (~ 50 nestboxes near =
Gaspereau) are showing our first cases of starving nestlings that we've =
seen in years, including a couple of cases where whole broods have died.

Tree swallows have all sorts of adaptations to deal with lousy years -- =
in that sense, you could say they anticipate having a bad year now and =
then. But still, it's shaping up to be one of those years.

Cheers,
Andy Horn
Halifax

breeders such as Blue-headed Vireos, Yellow Warblers, Parulas, Hermit =
Thrushes, Alder Flycatchers, etc.but mostly absent are Black & White, =
Water Thrushes, Black-throated Greens, Ruby-crowns, Winter Wrens, for =
example, which were plentiful in May. The cold and wet spring may be =
partially responsible, for instance two pairs of Tree Swallows which had =
been bringing nesting material eventually deserted during the cold and =
wet period, the first time this has happened in many years of nesting. =
And the dawn chorus is indeed practically non-existent.
