I used to be able to stand on my doorstep and hear them every = evening, this year I have heard here them just twice. My Tree Swallows = are still coming and going occasionally but they should have hatched by = now and I see no indications of this. Kevin Lantz Front Centre From: Sylvia Fullerton=20 Sent: Friday, June 14, 2013 23:47 To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca=20 Subject: Re: [NatureNS] Bird Song in NS Lance, I agree that there has been a notable decline in bird song at = least in Lunenburg Co. Comparing this year's song to the five years of = almost daily atlassing shows a significant fall-off. During the NS Migration Count and through much of May there seemed to be = much more song, but that disappeared in June. There are still common = breeders such as Blue-headed Vireos, Yellow Warblers, Parulas, Hermit = Thrushes, Alder Flycatchers, etc.but mostly absent are Black & White, = Water Thrushes, Black-throated Greens, Ruby-crowns, Winter Wrens, for = example, which were plentiful in May. The cold and wet spring may be = partially responsible, for instance two pairs of Tree Swallows which had = been bringing nesting material eventually deserted during the cold and = wet period, the first time this has happened in many years of nesting. = And the dawn chorus is indeed practically non-existent. It's all very disturbing. Sylvia Fullerton Broad Cove, Lun.
