A possible rare vagrant was recor= ded this week: one or more Smith=E2=80=99s Longspurs. On October 31, 2012 a= t 12:59 AM longspur rattles were recorded for a period of 13 seconds. The s= pectrograms of the rattles fit exceptionally well with Smith=E2=80=99s Long= spur. The distinguishing characteristics of its rattle are it=E2=80=99s hig= h frequency compared to Lapland Longspur (more than 1 kHz difference), it= =E2=80=99s shorter duration (~13 vs 18 ms), and the shape of the individual= rattle notes, emphasizing a rising note in Smith=E2=80=99s and a descendin= g note in Lapland. In addition, listening to the rattles and comparing them= with known recordings of Smith=E2=80=99s and Lapland again strongly sugges= t Smith=E2=80=99s. (The rattle of the Snow Bunting has a still lower freque= ncy).=0AThe summary of night flight calls for the week beginning the evenin= g of 26 October and ending the morning of 2 November is as follows:=0A=C2= =A0=0ACanada Goose =E2=80=93 1=0AKilldeer =E2=80=93 1=0ABoreal Chickadee = =E2=80=93 1=0AGolden-crowned Kinglet =E2=80=93 1=0AHermit Thrush =E2=80=93 = 3=0AYellow-rumped Warbler =E2=80=93 2=0AAmerican Tree Sparrow =E2=80=93 11= =0ASavannah Sparrow =E2=80=93 3=0AFox Sparrow =E2=80=93 1=0ASong Sparrow = =E2=80=93 17=0AWhite-throated Sparrow =E2=80=93 20=0ADark-eyed Junco =E2=80= =93 1=0AUnidentified Sparrows =E2=80=93 6=0ALongspur(s) =E2=80=93 see above= =0AUnidentified songbirds =E2=80=93 1=0AUnidentified birds =E2=80=93 1=0ATo= tal =E2=80=93 79=0A=C2=A0=0AUpdated charts can be viewed at: http://www.joh= nfkearney.com/Nocturnal_Migration.html --1146854128-1308485507-1351938759=:80649 Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <html><body><div style=3D"color:#000; background-color:#fff; font-family:ti= mes new roman, new york, times, serif;font-size:12pt"><div><span>Excellent = website!</span></div><div style=3D"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-size: 16px; fo= nt-family: times new roman,new york,times,serif; background-color: transpar= ent; font-style: normal;"><br><span></span></div><div style=3D"color: rgb(0= , 0, 0); font-size: 16px; font-family: times new roman,new york,times,serif= ; background-color: transparent; font-style: normal;"><span>Are there any o= ther nocturnal migration monitoring locations set up in Atlantic Canada?
