I'm pretty sure this fishing technique for the green heron has been =
known for several decades. I used to have a nice book of bird photos =
and lore by Arthur Allen of Cornell University, dated back to the 1970s =
or 1960s, in which was a sequence of photos of a green heron fishing =
with pieces of bread? somewhere in Florida? But I don't believe I have =
heard of any other species of herons using this technique. Cheers from =
Jim in Wolfville.

There is, according to an article I saw some years ago (National =
Geographic or perhaps Natural History), a Heron in Japan that fishes =
with bait routinely; usually a small leaf or petal flicked onto the =
water as I recall.

      Thanks for sharing this, Bernard!

Isn't that something else? I saw this just the other day. I =
thought to myself, 'Wow', a Green Heron, like the one down at Sullivan's =
Pond!
Here's another video, also showing a Green Heron behaving in the =
same way. As the commentator says, 'What a shrewdy'! Apparently, this =
video, when shown to scientists, caused quite a stir (or so says the =
write-up).

      Cheers!

I see that there are other videos of this species doing the same thing. =
I cannot say that I had seen the Sullivans Pond Dartmouth bird this past =
spring doing this, but it would have been interesting to watch if it =
had:
