the hay reduces through June and is too low to sustain dairy cows. For beef
cattle and horses it is OK and in some cases better. I am fortunate that the
hay on my farm is being used to support horses for the most part so the
cutting is not until at least July 15th each year. As such, I have good
numbers of all the ground nesting grassland species found in my area.

If the convent is simply cutting to maintain the fields as grassland and
meadows, the longer they can delay the better from a bird's point of view.

All the best,

It depends on what they are going to use the hay for Randy.

For mulch or whatever the latter the better, for sheep its a little

late now but cattle will eat it but not happily! For horses

get it between the blooms whenever that is and store it for a year.

Hope this helps

Paul

Subject: [NatureNS] ground-nesting birds in hayfields; bear photos

All,

I have been very fortunate to be able to work on the lands on which the
local convent sits (see: http://www.themarthas.com/). I have done both owl
work and beetle work there. This morning, I was asked if it would be ok for
them to cut the hay at this point...it's earlier than usual but they want to
reduce the impact on the ground-nesting birds. Being somewhat out of my
realm, I told them that I thought it was early, and that mid/late July would
be safe(r). Can anyone add anything to this?

I have posted a few of the shots of the young bears at my feeder:
http://people.stfx.ca/rlauff/photos/feederbears/ Enjoy. Evidently, the
bears were so disgruntled at me taking down my seed feeders, they took down
and smashed (crunched?) my hummingbird feeder. I took pictures of that, too,
but I can't find the cable to my camera just now.

Randy
