I need an owl or two right about now but will settle on a good old mouser to be picked up this weekend. Hi Randy We live in an old house in Lunenburg County. It is not Fort Knox to mice so my job in fall and winter is to keep a check on things. In the last 12 months, I've caught about 10% of the usual. I don't know what kind of mice I catch, some years its varied - they are all house mice to me. As Judge Judy says "Follow the money" - with the owls its probably "Follow the mice" Paul From: Randy Lauff <randy.lauff@gmail.com> To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca Sent: Wednesday, June 29, 2011 11:25:10 AM Subject: Re: [NatureNS] A great year for nesting owls... Well, the classic answer is that the Red-backed Voles have likely crashed. I'm not monitoring them this year, so I can't say for sure. Kestrels are down too, so perhaps the meadow voles crashed this year, too? I realize that the diet of Kestrels is quite diverse, including large insects, but none-the-less, low rodent numbers is likely the best hypothesis. In contrast, out west, owl boxers are having a bumper year. Randy_________________________________ RF Lauff Way in the boonies of Antigonish County, NS. I've just come back from the Highlands where Fritz McEvoy and I did a final check on over 20 boxes, then I did another nine the next day on my way back, for a total of over 30 boxes checked. One red squirrel. That's it. No Saw-whets, no Boreals, no kestrels, no flying squirrels...not even a wasp nest to make things interesting. Definitely, my worst year in over a decade. And as far as I know, none of the hobbiests who have small numbers of boxes have any nests either. Randy _________________________________ RF Lauff Way in the boonies of Antigonish County, NS.
