It is not Fort Knox to mice so my job in fall and winter is to keep a check on things. In the last 12 months, I've caught about 10% of the usual. I don't know what kind of mice I catch, some years its varied - they are all house mice to me. As Judge Judy says "Follow the money" - with the owls its probably "Follow the mice" Paul ________________________________ From: Randy Lauff <randy.lauff@gmail.com> To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca Sent: Wednesday, June 29, 2011 11:25:10 AM Subject: Re: [NatureNS] A great year for nesting owls... Well, the classic answer is that the Red-backed Voles have likely crashed. I'm not monitoring them this year, so I can't say for sure. Kestrels are down too, so perhaps the meadow voles crashed this year, too? I realize that the diet of Kestrels is quite diverse, including large insects, but none-the-less, low rodent numbers is likely the best hypothesis. In contrast, out west, owl boxers are having a bumper year. Randy _________________________________ RF Lauff Way in the boonies of Antigonish County, NS.
