I've had a swallow nesting box in my yard for several years, and each spring I clean it out to prepare for the new arrivals. This spring I noticed the hole had been enlarged. I attributed this to squirrels. I removed the box as I didn't want starlings and replaced it with a new box with a swallow-size hole. The swallows have been flying since a week or so and today I heard hammering. Here was a Hairy woodpecker pounding away, and the hole is now enlarged again. Could this bird be trying to start a nest this late or is it looking for a place to roost? Any thoughts? Billy
