APR. 25, 2010 - Paper or white birch catkins are now open in Wolfville.

APR. 26, 2010 - Yesterday by the end of the afternoon, several pink-
flowering magnolia trees had opened up most of their flowers and were
close to at their best for this year.

Today, along the Wolfville rail trail, shadbush (serviceberry,
Juneberry) flower-buds were opening (extremely early, I think), and
pin cherry flower-buds are swollen and showing a hint of white.

APR. 27, 2010 - Stella's Pond (D.U. pond, M. Dyke Rd.): Canada goose
still apparently incubating eggs in nest on east end of island. I
didn't notice the other goose, but I didn't really search for it.

Gesner's Pond (M. Dyke Rd., s. of Church St.): 2 double-crested
cormorants.

Also, after being chastised by Patricia Chalmers on my field trip
about forgetting that Abraham Gesner was the first to manufacture
kerosene, I made a point of studying the memorial plaque in his name
across the road from the pond. He was a geologist and physician but
apparently also a naturalist, whose collection was the basis for a
nat. hist. museum in St. John and later for the provincial New
Brunswick Museum of Natural History. I remarked on my field trip on
Sunday that the name "Gesner's Pond" might entice people to find out
more about him, and it worked for me!

Kidston's Pond (along Church St. east from M. Dyke Rd.): along the
north shore was a single Canada goose; I suspect that perhaps its
mate is on a nest?somewhere along the edge of the pond? (no islands
in this pond).

Port Williams sewage ponds: about 75+ tree swallows with at least one
barn swallow, a m,f pair of ring-necked ducks, 5 male mallards (no
doubt there are a few female mallards on nests along the pond edges
or nearby), and several red-winged blackbirds.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
