Despite the gloomy and cold weather I thought I would check out the St. =
Croix Hants County Bittern this morning after the initial report from =
Friday.=20
It is still there, in the pond right behind the ball field and making =
its peculiar empty drain-pipe booming noises at regular intervals. This =
one sounds more subdued than others I have heard, but that is probably =
because of the traffic noise from the nearby 101 Highway. I arrived at =
9:45 am and left at 10:30 while it was still sounding off.

This pond is a busy place and well worth the occasional visit.
At least 10 Red-winged Blackbirds, all appeared to be males, all hyper =
active.
There are 2 pairs of Canada Geese, one is clearly on the nest and =
doesn't want to be seen.
Grackles are nesting and are very active. There are large numbers here.
At least 6 Tree Swallows were darting about.
I located 5 Northern Flickers, including one using a telephone pole as =
a drum.
Pheasants, Mourning Doves and robins were also obvious.=20
A lone Northern Harrier did a slow pass over the marshy areas.

On the way home I saw a fully mature Bald Eagle on the mud flats of the =
Windsor causeway. It was feeding on what appeared to be a gull of some =
kind. There were still large numbers of gulls very close to where it was =
feeding.
