23 April 2010

Some recent sightings from the Prospect Peninsula:

There was a Northern Parula singing at the base of Bayview Drive this
afternoon, the earliest I've ever had the species in Nova Scotia. I
heard my first Yellow-rumped Warbler of the season elsewhere in the
subdivision.

I have yet to hear Fox Sparrows at the edge of the Prospect Barrens,
where there are typically six to eight territorial males. Perhaps
their tardiness explains why a male Fox Sparrow was singing behind
our house in White's Lake until two days ago, though he didn't attend
the feeders. It is possible that the mob of juncos dissuaded him.

Double-crested Cormorants have returned in numbers to their colonies
on Inner and Outer Gull Islands, at the eastern mouth of Shad
Bay. Nest-building is underway in earnest.

I saw my first Cabbage White butterfly today.

Cheers,

Blake
