So many plants are flowering earlier than usual this year! On
Monday (12 April) I noticed that the flower buds of the Norway Maples
were beginning to open. The cool weather in the last few days has
slowed them down, but any day now the trees along the streets in
south end Halifax will sport their fluffy clusters of lime-green
flowers, and people will comment on the "leaves" coming out. In
Halifax Norway Maples usually bloom during the first week in May.

We have been sharing observations of various plants and terrestrial
animals that seem to be early this year. Can anyone tell us if the
ocean is warmer than normal for this time of year? Are marine life
cycles similarly advanced in the season? I ask, because I have
noticed in other years that Eric Mills' observation of a "spring
bloom of phytoplankton" often coincides with the Norway Maple bloom.

	Cheers,

	Patricia L. Chalmers
	Halifax
