Thanks Jim,
=A0
This turtle may certainly be a Red-eared Slider, because it did have a smal=
l orange-red stripe on the side of its head. I guess I figured it resembled=
most the examples pictured in John Gilhen's book, that=A0being the Eastern=
 Painted Turtle.
So, as you say, this could=A0certainly have=A0been somebody's pet at one ti=
me, that was dumped because they=A0couldn't be bothered to look after it an=
ymore.
=A0
Thank you for the clarification. I sincerely did not even consider=A0it bei=
ng a=A0Red-eared Slider, but I do now.
=A0
Cheers

Gayle, if there was any orange in the markings on the head, then indeed it =
would have been a RED-EARED SLIDER OR TURTLE, which is an alien species tha=
t can turn up anywhere in Nova Scotia and live a long time, after being dis=
carded or "set free" by previous pet owners. =A0So if anyone sees this turt=
le in Sullivan's Pond, please look carefully at the head stripes, which are=
all yellow in the Painted Turtle.=20

Cheers? from Jim in Wolfville

I must admit, I did not consider the Red [Red-eared] Slider Turtle, which t=
his turtle in Sullivan's Pond may very well be.=20

Apologies if this appears twice. Sent earlier but did not appear.
=A0
Today, around 2:30-3PM,on this 1st day of Spring, as I, and my Springer Spa=
niel, 'Dash' took a leisurely 2 hour walk=A0on this glorious day, I saw som=
ething odd looking, atop a rock, close to the island in Sullivan's Pond, th=
at is nearest to Hawthorn St. As I did not have my binoculars, I didn't kno=
w if it was a piece of wood, or what.
The water level at the pond has recently been lowered, making it possible t=
o go onto the island without getting my feet wet.
So, leashed dog and I, made our way onto the island and ventured toward the=
 edge closest to 'that rock'.
Astonishingly, it was a turtle, sunning itself!
It is the first time that I have ever seen a turtle at Sullivan's Pond! I d=
o know that they have been seen there over the years though.
I had a good look at this turtle and when I got home, I=A0 consulted the bo=
ok, 'Amphibians and Reptiles of Nova Scotia' written by John Gilpin, and it=
appears that this turtle is an Eastern Painted Turtle.
The fabulous weather, notwithstanding, this sighting 'made my day'!
