Hi all
Here is a belated report of the Pictou Hbr. CBC held Jan 1 under lovely weather conditions. We had a few less species than usual (69) and the number of birds a little less than usual with the number of ducks down because the area is still not frozen-in like it usually is by this time of year.
Most numerous species were A. Crows with dispersal of the New Glasgow roost being the first birds recorded by my group near the George St. Bridge ~2500 birds; Greater Scaup (2233 ) and Black Ducks(2280 ). Two Double-crested Cormorants were found although a few days earlier Steve Vines had seen 7, but the large number of eagles is taking a rapid toll on the Cormorants. Less common ducks were Green-winged Teal-5, Pintail-2, Gadwall-10, American Wigeon-9, Barrow's Goldeneye-6 , Hooded Merganser-67.
I saw a male TUFTED DUCK at the outflow of the NS power plant in Trenton on Jan. 4- for a count week species.
I noted a 3rd winter LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL on the ice near the George St. bridge in New Glasgow.
Other species included 2 Great Horned Owls, 1 Barred Owl, 5 Kingfishers, 12 Flickers, 10 Pileated Woodpeckers and 5 Brown Creepers.
There were 149 Robins and 50 Cedar Waxwings, but not a single Bohemian Waxwing. There is still an ample supply of berries and apples around for a later arrival of this species unless the Starlings get there first. Steve and Amber Vines rediscovered the BROWN THRASHER in Pictou near the Hector Centre. It has been present since mid- November.
There was a single Northern Shrike found by Charlie Kendell and Bernice Moores in Caribou River area. There were 2 Yellow-rumped Warblers on Caribou I. by the above group and 1 at Melmerby Beach by Rick Ferguson.
My group with Carol Harris and Jim McKay found 2 PINE WARBLERS near First Street in Trenton and another PIWA on Duke Street Trenton. A fourth was at the feeder of Elwin and Janet Hemphill in Pictou. Tim and Caroline Brennan had the male Northern Cardinal in their yard at Pictou Landing.
Sparrow numbers were low with 6 species and only Song Sparrows (48) in any number. Susann Myers and R. Ferguson had 3 Snow Buntings at Melmerby Beach PP.
There were NO blackbirds of any description and finches faired no better despite the abundant cone crop on the conifers. We had 433 Goldfinches, 2 White-winged Crossbills and 1 Pine Siskin.
We did not have any Ev. Grosbeaks although there are in the tangent Springville CBC circle. Once again we did not have a single Boreal Chickadee although there were noted for count week.
All in all, it was a pleasant count day with a cool breeze near the water in the afternoon, but counting conditions were ideal with only a small skiff of snow allowing full access to everywhere we wanted to go.The only disadvantage was a very high tide through most of the day obliterating some of the usual duck roosts.
cheers
ken
