DEC. 21, 2009 - In early afternoon, I drove to North Grand Pre (Long
Island) to try to find the N. MOCKINGBIRD that has been reported
there. Sure enough, just above its large clump of multiflora rose
loaded with delectable? rose-hips, the mockingbird perched just above
them in an obvious spot (advertising that this spot was his?). The
locality is just west (left) of the paved T-junction at the north end
of the main Grand Pre road through the dykelands. The bird was
directly just north of the first house from the junction. This
mockingbird qualifies as a Count Week bird for the Wolfville Count on
Dec. 19.

Bernard Forsythe says that another wintering mockingbird hangs out
near the planted Canada? holly berries just south of the Wolfville
Wharf, along the railroad tracks.
----------------------
Bernard phoned me this morning about an interesting finding this
morning, in an orchard somewhere not far from his home (Wolfville
Ridge). He found an area of tracks of coyote(s), an area where the
tracks etc. had matted the snow down densely, and nearby an intact
dead short-tailed shrew that had been abandoned there. He suspects
that one or more coyotes caught the shrew and just played with it a
bit, then decided not to eat it. All shrews are reputed to be bad-
tasting, especially to cats that catch them.

Birds, on the other hand, are much less fastidious about what they
eat. Thus Bernard took the shrew home and will offer it tonight? to
his back-yard
barred owl(s), which will probably just swallow it whole with no
thought of taste!
--------------------
Regarding our Wolfville Xmas Count on Dec. 19, I got this note from
Doug Linzey concerning 3 WHITE GEESE (SNOW GEESE?) seen at the
Canning Aboiteau at about 3 p.m.:

"About 3 pm we saw three white geese at the Canning aboiteau.
Unfortunately I didn't have my binocs but they matched Snow Goose in
every respect (bills, size) except that I didn't see any black
wingtips. They were pretty much hunkered down, not moving much and
slightly hidden in the grass.

"Is it more likely that they were domestic geese? Or did someone else
report these birds more definitively?"
---------------------
Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
