Here in White's Lake there are hordes of hoarding Blue Jays as well,
despite the large flocks that migrated out (or through?) the province
in recent weeks. I am considering buying some new feeders, but in
the meantime have had some success is surrounding two feeders with
homemade cages. To make the cages I used pieces of lobster trap
wire mesh that I find washed up on our beaches. I also use intact
lobster traps as feeders, to deter both feral cats and larger birds.

Sparrows, chickadees, and nuthatches all slip in and out easily, but
the holes are too small for Purple Finches.

Also, I distract the majority of the Blue Jays by placing cracked
corn on an open platform, and most seem to be content with this
offering. It is certainly cheaper than black oil sunflower seed.

Cheers,

Blake
