--=====================_280985734==.ALT Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed 22 August 2009 The St. Margaret's Bay Trail is a recent discovery for us -- it is 36 km long, stretching from the western end of the BLT trail, east to the start of the Aspotogan Rail-Trail. We cycled the stretch between French Village Station and Boutlier's Point, finishing with a nice lunch at the Bike and Bean Cafe. It was my first bike ride of the summer, and in my haste to ensure I had all the proper biking gear I forgot my binoculars. Fortunately most of the birds were in curious flocks accompanying chickadees, and it seems (in my experience) that when you "pish" to lure in birds, and you are astride a bicycle, that the birds approach more closely, as you present a different shape than if standing. Most birds were so close I didn't need binoculars. There was a good variety of warblers on offer, including an Ovenbird, 5 Black-throated Blues, 2 Bay-breasteds, 2 Blackpolls, 6 "Baypolls" (my binoculars were needed if I wished to determine the species), a Blackburnian, and many other more routine warblers. The only real surprise was a sighting of two Warbling Vireos in one busy flock. I am increasingly enjoying birding by bicycle, and am curious is anyone else partakes of this pleasure. There is plenty of opportunity for bike birding in HRM, as the network of bike trails (mostly rails to trails) is extended yearly.
