Aug 5 and 6 Jupiter is the bright starlike object near the Full Moon. Recently it has been moving past a star that is about the same brightness as one of Jupiter's 4 Galilean moons (45 Capricorni). The position of this star has been giving the appearance of an extra Galilean moon as Jupiter moves past it. Altough this at minimum has been a small telescope event, you may be interested in the sketches of two recent observations and what it represents. In all I managed 3 different observations of Jupiter between Aug 1 and Aug 5 showing its "5th moon", 45 Cap. Missed the occultation event (when Jupiter moved in front of the star) but since then managed these two interesting views recorded in sketches I made linked from here: ( http://web.mac.com/sherm39/iWeb/Site/home_page_nuv.html ) If you are on the slower dialup access, you may wish to bypass loading in the webpage and go to the diagram links below which may be quicker: ( http://web.mac.com/sherm39/iWeb/Site/home_page_nuv_files/ Jup_occ_45Cap_1.jpg ) ( http://web.mac.com/sherm39/iWeb/Site/home_page_nuv_files/Jupiter_5m% 20090805c.jpg ) Each diagram contains some background information. This page of SpaceWeather.com also features the same event.
