Hi all:

=20

A few weeks ago I was accidently in a square that I did not realize had lan=
d based points. The square is for a large island called Cross Island. I u=
sed to go there when young=2C but have not been there for many years. I ho=
pe to plan a boat trip there next year for the last year of the atlas. Any=
how=2C this square in the first atlas had no data whatsoever. Not an entry=
. I'm really surprised as there is a spot on Hell's Point which is on the =
mainland and a sizeable chunk of land at Rose Head. As I managed a few wee=
ks ago before I realized this square existed I accidently recorded some dat=
a while in the field as there was breeding evidence there and put in for si=
x or seven species. There are many more that I'll have to get.

=20

Anyhow=2C to get to the point of this entry=2C I went to Rose Head today to=
 follow-up on two owls which had been seen there early last week. They wer=
e aggitated=2C which suggests to me that there might still be young about. =
 I'm guessing great horned owl as they've been known to nest in this area a=
nd the habitat is good for them. The owls were large which rules out north=
ern saw-whet as a possibility. There is wonderful habitat with mostly dead=
 and dying trees all softwood. There are lots of trees with old mans beard=
 and the trees are not large. A lot of cutting and development for losts i=
s in progress=2C but still a lot of good habitat remains. I hear gray jays=
 on two occasions along the road and then saw two=2C so I can easily say th=
at I can add them to the square for now as a pair on territory. The habita=
t is perfect and there is no way that they are not breeding there. I will =
confirm this next year. =20

=20

I had a singing northern water-thrush there today. The habitat is good=2C =
but I'm reluctant to record it as a lot of migrants appear to be on the mov=
e. I did have black-capped chickadee and common yellowthroat carrying food=
 for young. So these I feel as though will be accurate as proof of carryin=
g food for young that are newly hatched. =20

=20

My wanting to record other birds will have to wait until next year. I had =
a large grouping of black-capped chickadees=2C three boreal chickadees=2C a=
 Canada Warbler=2C three yellow-rumped warblers=2C a black-throated green w=
arbler=2C a magnolia warbler=2C a veery=2C a hermit thrush=2C a downy woodp=
ecker=2C a white-throated sparrow and some dark-eyed juncos all travelling =
together=2C so definitely migrants.

=20

Even though the Canada warbler was an obvious migrant=2C I suspect I will f=
ind one breeding in this square next year. Does anyone in the Canadian Wil=
dlife Service want the GPS of the Canada Warbler anyhow=2C for the record.
