Some of you may be interested in the following two HFN field trips. For further information, please use the contact phone numbers provided.

1.

On Saturday, August 8th join Halifax Field Naturalists (HFN) and Bird Studies Canada (BSC) for a morning beach walk at beautiful Martinique Beach Provincial Park, a designated Important Bird Area (IBA) that lies along a major migration corridor called the Atlantic Flyway. Meet at 10:00 a.m. at the last parking area on the Martinique Beach road (Boardwalk#8). We'll observe the endangered Piping Plovers which breed here, discussing the challenges facing this beach-dependent bird and what BSC and others are doing to recover its population in Nova Scotia. Contact 426-4055.

2.

On Sunday August 23rd join Halifax Field Naturalists, Wooden River Watershed Environmental Organization and the Nova Scotia Wild Flora Society, for an 8 km field trip over the first loop of the Bluff Wilderness Hiking Trail. The terrain is a patchwork of Black Spruce, Red Oak, and mixed forest; lakes and associated wetlands, and granite barrens and bogs. We will meet at 10:00 a.m. at the Bluff Trail Parking Lot. To access the parking lot, go to exit 4 on hwy 103, turn onto the Bay Road (Rt.3) heading back towards Halifax, go 2 km to Bay Self-Storage on the right. Bluff Trail parking lot is immediately afterward. (Storm Date - Sunday, August 30th) Contact 423-5716.

Cheers,

Bob McDonald

Halifax
