To add further to Jim's report, Jan Baldwin at the Wolfville Farmers market this morning, told me of two very recent sightings of good sized flocks - possibly 1000 (?) shorebirds - around high tide in the past couple of days. The first report came from Jan herself who saw a flock flying along the western dyke of Grand Pre almost opposite the Wolfville Sewage Ponds yesterday, and she passed on a report from Gisela Westphalen who had also seen a sizable flock at the eastern tip of Long Island, Grand Pre, so the 'peeps' are indeed arriving. Wolford Sent: Saturday, July 25, 2009 5:35 PM To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca; Peter Hicklin Subject: [NatureNS] shorebirds in Wolfville Harbour at high tide JULY 25, 2009 - SUPER-HIGH TIDE (predicted for 4:06 p.m.) at 4:30 p.m. in Wolfville Harbour -- shorebirds seen roosting in rocks along railroad tracks were at least 4 WILLETS and at least 11 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, plus at least 3 PEEPS, one of which was a LEAST SANDPIPER. Even though the yellowlegs were not very vocal, I'm sure of their identities as greaters from their sizes as they flew with the willets. Ordinarily I find the two yellowlegs very difficult to distinguish. Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
