I'm unhappy to see the over-preoccupation with "lighting up the night", as I'm sure many of you are as well. The city is putting many new light standards around Banook lake for the upcoming canoe races. Our beautiful Birch Cove park will be lit up like a mall parking lot! (And, no doubt, once the lights are in place they will be turned on every night for the forseeable future.) They have also cleared substantial underbrush for tent platforms, but hopefully, Mother Nature will be allowed to reclaim those areas after the big events. Gloria McClusky loves lighting things at night and doesn't seem mindful of any downside to this practice, but I suppose she's probably not to blame for this one. Two years ago I was at nearby Red Bridge Pond, with Suzanne Borkowski and Bob McDonald, and we noticed that there were Tree Swallows there which were nesting inside the streetlights. I had seen House Sparrows and Starlings do this before, but never swallows. Have a look at some light standards next time you are in the area! Cheers, Patricia L. From my Sibley's guide and from what I could recall in my sightings, they appeared to be Tree Swallows, perhaps?
