What is a BioBlitz? Find out May 20 at Saint Mary's
This is your chance to learn more about preserving the wilderness areas =
around us.
In preparation for the 2009 Saint Mary's University BioBlitz at Blue =
Mountain-Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Area, organizers of the event are =
hosting a pre-BioBlitz information session on Wednesday, May 20 at the =
university.
The event called What is a BioBlitz? will help people understand how a =
BioBlitz works, why it's important and how they can be involved.=20
The session featuring presentations by environmental experts will be =
held in the Scotiabank Conference Theatre in the Sobey Building at Saint =
Mary's. Presentations begin at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
Featured speakers will include Dr. Cathy Conrad, a professor in Saint =
Mary's Department of Geography. Her presentation will look at the idea =
of BioBlitzes world-wide and how the local BioBlitz can play an =
important role in helping preserve the diversity of our regional =
ecosystem.=20
Andrew Hebda of the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History will also be =
on hand to give a presentation about last year's BioBlitz at Long Lake =
Provincial Park. Hebda will provide an overview of the event and =
highlight some of the 694 species identified. This year, due to the =
greater size and diversity of habitats in the Blue Mountain-Birch Cove =
Lakes Wilderness Area, the scientists expect to exceed this number =
significantly.
The evening will conclude with a presentation by Raymond Plourde of the =
Ecology Action Centre. He will talk about the importance of the Blue =
Mountain-Birch Coves Lakes Wilderness Area and outline the ongoing =
efforts that led to the area being officially designated as Nova =
Scotia's newest protected wilderness area on April 21.
The evening will also include the screening of a video about a recent =
BioBlitz at the University of Connecticut. The film demonstrates the =
activities that will take place at the Saint Mary's BioBlitz on June 5 =
and 6.
The Saint Mary's University BioBlitz is a 24-hour taxonomy survey that =
will provide a baseline biodiversity snapshot of the area. More than 80 =
scientists from several universities across Atlantic Canada will =
converge on Blue Mountain-Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Area to survey the =
biological diversity of the area - and best of all, the public is =
invited to attend.
The event is designed to increase the communities' awareness of the =
scientific importance of biodiversity in our immediate neighbourhood and =
the valuable services that various animal and plant species provide to =
improve the quality of our lives.
